IMPULS (International Math-teacher Professionalization Using Lesson Study) in Japan and Lesson Study Alliance, a non-profit corporation in Chicago, USA, are offering intensive Lesson Study Immersion Program in Japan in June 2025. The program will run from October 28 (Tuesday) to November 6 (Thursday), 2025.
The program offer educators a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic mathematics Lesson Study in Japan. Participants will observe several mathematics lessons developed through Lesson Study in elementary and secondary schools and observe how Japanese teachers conduct their post-lesson discussions. All research lessons and post-lesson discussions will be simultaneously translated into English by experts in mathematics teaching and learning. In addition, participants will have opportunities to interact with teachers, students, and education professors from schools and universities in Japan.IMPULS Immersion programs have been offered annually since 2012 (except 2020 & 2021). Over 400 educators from 15 countries have participated. They have described it as a life-changing experience and have used their experience to support colleagues in implementing Lesson Study in their schools and home countries.

Participants must pay the tuition, 4,500 USD, which includes the cost of accommodations during the program from the arrival day (Monday October 27 check in) to the departure day (Friday, November 7 check out). Participants will be responsible for their own international airfare to Tokyo and local transportation in Tokyo.
We can accept only a limited number of participants due to the constraints of live research lesson observation. Interested individuals should complete this application form along with a non-refundable 50 USD. Applicants will be reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis up to the capacity of the program. If your initial application is accepted, we will send you an acceptance form and instructions for paying a deposit of 450 USD by August 29, 2025. The remaining tuition balance (4000 USD) must be received by us by September 15, 2025.
Application process
- Submit an initial application along with a non-refundable $50 application fee (payable here) as soon as possible but no later than August 28. Space is limited and applications will be accepted on rolling basis.
- If your application is accepted, we will send you an acceptance form and instructions for paying a deposit of 450 USD by August 29, 2025.
- The remaining tuition balance (4000 USD) must be received by us by September 15, 2025, along with confirmation of your flight arrangements.
If we do not have enough participants registered by August 29, we may need to cancel the program, in which case you will received a full refund of any payments made, including the 50 USD application fee.
